The original kitchen in this Oakland craftsman house from 1919 was in need of much attention. The small and dilapidated original kitchen counters were piecemeal and supplemented with various cabinets & furniture finds. The room suffered from failing fixtures, old appliances, and poor lighting combined with an awkward space.
To revitalize the kitchen, Studio Pear introduced a new skylight to bring in soft daylight and provide a sense of loft to the small space. The tight and narrow counter at the entry was replaced with a full height pantry cabinet. The countertop angles out from the pantry to a full depth counter. The new organization creates a highly functional galley kitchen centered underneath the skylight. Custom touches like open shelving to organize everyday items, while recessed drawer pulls & custom cut laundry door ventilation help accentuate the space. While the color choice for the cabinets might seem bright, the earth-toned quality of terracotta is grounding and calm. The space is bookended by a faceted bar counter that creates a place of relaxation and socializing.
