STUDIO PEAR

was founded out of the desire to provide for clients our passion for great design and dedication to future generations.  As architects the work we do has a great impact on the world.  We have a responsibility to consider how we can mitigate the negative impacts global as well as for the building users.  We have developed a deep experience and knowledge of sustainability that we apply to each situation and according to our client’s needs.  While important, these techniques and technologies are always at the service of delivering beautiful design that will bring delight for decades to come.

We have over 20 years of architecture experience in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and during that time have always to learn, expand and deepen our knowledge.  Through our education and practice we have become experts at some of the important issues concerning California including wild fire prevention, renewable energy systems, resiliency, grey water systems, energy efficient building methods.

Depending on the specifics of your project we work collaboratively with a broad range of specialty designers for structural engineering, energy analysis, landscape design, interior design, lighting design.  We have connections with many of the Bay Areas industry leaders to help bring the best solutions to your project.

Every design at Studio Pear is tailored to the needs of the client and requirements of the site.  Although we are willing to explore and discuss all the possibilities we pride ourselves on finding practical and economical solutions.  Our number one goal for our clients is to find the service that they need and brings comfort to their lives.

Founder and principal of Studio Pear, brian s. pearson, grew up on farm land in New Mexico.  The descendant of multi-generation San Francisco family, he is now proud to call Oakland home.  He has been a CA licensed architect since 2009.  Before studying and practicing architecture he worked as a carpenter and furniture maker.  Part of his building experience was also urban theory education working and living at Arcosanti in Arizona.  When not absorbed in all things building he enjoys being in nature, hiking, camping and traveling.

At Studio Pear we are passionate about delivering the best design possible – the best in energy efficiency, best material use, lowest-ecological impact and best utilization of the site.  During our years of design practice we have dedicated time to research and learning about the impacts of the building industry and high performance construction.  In that effort we have studied and become certified in many sustainable building programs.

brian is a LEED Accredited Professional (AP) since 2009, passionate about the Living Building Challenge and Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD) with the Passive House Institute since 2018.  Additionally we have experience in design for wild-fire prevention, all electric houses and off-grid energy systems.

A certification process has the added benefits in guarantee accountability, quality assurance by third party oversight, and that construction outcomes are as predicted/ desired during the design stages.   We recognize that certifying a project is not within the budget or desire of every project, but we at Studio Pear utilize several of these programs as part of our design toolkit:

Passive House

Passive House is recognized as the world’s most stringent standard and certification program backed by building science.  Many certified project report energy use reduction of over 70%.  The standard is not focused exclusively on energy efficiency.  The five principles relate to issues of user wellbeing and comfort which results in a quality, healthy and durable building.

Living Building Challenge

The Living Building Challenge is the world’s most aspirational certificate program in sustainability.  The program addresses a broad range of building industry issues broken into several categories or “petals”.  The petals focus on the macro: resource use & site utilization down to the micro: building design & products.  At Studio Pear we often refer to the petals as guides during the design process.  Their “red-list” of chemicals and materials to avoid
