OCEAN HOUSES

A pair of mirrored houses were designed for narrow adjacent lots in Oakland’s Golden Gate neighborhood.  The form of the two story houses makes opportunities for solar PV and solar hot water heating to supplement the hydronic in-floor heating.  North facing clerestory windows under the angled roofs allow for gentle daylighting at the center of the houses.

The interiors have simple finishes and focus on a wood clad central area that include the stair case, powder room and kitchen cabinetry.  Exterior balconies overlooking rear yard.

Features of the Ocean Houses make use of its setting to create an energy efficient house.  The saw tooth roof is angled to optimize the sun for PV and solar water heating.  The water preheated by the sun helps offset energy needed to run the in floor hydronic heat.  The saw tooth also allow for north facing clerestory windows for daylighting and natural ventilation.
